Road Trip Survival Tip
By Alina Avery
Sorry for my absence here on the blog! I decided to take Thanksgiving week and unplug and relax.
We had a bit of a whirlwind week. We left Boston on Sunday and drove two hours out to visit my brother in Connecticut. He was hosting a “Friendsgiving”, so we spent a few hours there eating and hanging out before hopping back in the car for another 3 hour drive to my parents in New Jersey. We spent a few days there relaxing and catching up with them (and helping prepare for their upcoming Thanksgiving feast) before getting back in the car down to Matt’s sister’s house in Maryland. The return trip this weekend was the same in reverse, minus the pit stop at my brother’s.
Needless to say, we spent a lot of time in the car! Which I don’t mind too much, Matt and I are both pretty capable drivers and enjoy spending quiet time in the car together. In fact, if I needed to think of a happy place, I’d choose riding shotgun with Matt on a cartrip. Here’s what makes it work:
Podcasts. Car trip music is great, but if you really want to pass the time, download a few episodes of This American Life or The Moth or some other storytelling podcast. It’s a great way to spend some passive time together and several of the stories actually make great conversation starters. It can be distracting if the stories are really good, but they’ll definitely keep you awake!
How do you survive long trips in the car?
