Spaghetti Night

November 18, 2015 by Alina Avery Leave a Comment

Keeping with the video theme of the week (it wasn’t on purpose, it’s just worked out that way!), here’s another one for you:

Daisy and I were lucky enough to see a preview screening of the movie Brooklyn last week. The movie was beautiful and has gotten lots of great critical acclaim. It tells the story of Eilis Lacey, a young girl in Ireland who’s having a hard time thriving, so she moves to Brooklyn to pursue a better life for herself. It’s definitely worth seeing (and a great date night pick!) This video clip breaks down one of my favorite scenes from the movie: when Eilis meets her new Italian-American boyfriend (spoilers, sorry) Tony’s family over a spaghetti dinner.

Needless to say, it gave me the biggest spaghetti craving EVER. So last night, Matt and I dashed out to the grocery store and bought the necessary supplies.

Now I never really claimed to make anything authentically, and this was a bit thrown together, but it was delicious.

We bought thick spaghetti which took longer to cook, but felt sturdier and heartier. We also grabbed some hot Italian sausage, which was on crazy sale. Matt inexplicably chose shiitake mushrooms, which I didn’t notice until we got home. We also grabbed a can of fire roasted diced tomatoes.

We browned the meat with the mushrooms, an onion, and as much garlic as we could peel. Then we threw in the can of tomatoes and the second half of a jar of marinara sauce we used to make pizza last week. Italian grandmothers everywhere are rolling over in their graves.

I did follow two of the unwritten spaghetti making rules: add a mountain of parmesan cheese and make enough for 10 people.

We’ll be eating spaghetti for the rest of the week.
